Review: Jeju Taxi Tour by Richard Kim

Since we only had 3 days and 2 nights in Jeju, we decided to hire a taxi tour to save time as a lot of people recommended it online. After doing an online research, we found out that one Mr Won is highly recommended by almost everyone. Sadly, he was only available for the first day but not for the second day.

Hence, we decided to go with the second best, Richard Kim. After a few exchange of emails, we managed to book him for KRW100,000 for a half day tour and KRW130,000 for a full day tour. Please also note that on top of that, you are also expected to pay for the toll fees as well as for his food during the tour.

When we touch down Jeju airport, a sweet looking elderly man was already there holding the sign with our names on it. He’s none other than our tour guide, Mr Richard Kim and he promised us “many many” good times in Jeju.

We gave him a list of must visit places to plan since he is more familiar with the location of places. He then agreed to take us to four different places on the list for the half day tour. This was supposed to be our relaxing and stress free trip to Jeju since we will be leaving all the planning to the tour guide but it turned out to be pretty stressful in the end. Read on to find out why! ;P

The first place he took us to was however, not on our list. It was a tourist shop selling all of Jeju famous products and I can’t help but to notice the tangerine flavoured chocolates almost at every corner. After that, he took us to the Manjanggul Lava Tube….and that was the end of our tour. His reason was that we took too long to explore the lava tube and he finishes work at 5pm...-____-

Us, being all happy and excited before entering the lava tube not knowing that  we would come out later feeling the total opposite ;P

You can just imagine how upset we were at that time to pay him KRW100,000 and visit only one place when we were promised four!  Unless we were Speedy Gonzales, we don’t know how fast he expected us to finish the 2km walk. Not only did we have to walk to the end of the tunnel, but we had to walk all the way back to where we first entered! :o

As it is, we were all tired from the walk and the atmosphere became tensed on our way back as neither of us felt like talking to him. He must have sensed that we were annoyed with him so he decided to make little pit stops along the way just to cheer us up, which included the tangerine farm and the windmill.

He must have realized that we were easy to please....Just stop and take their pictures! haha

He also loves talking about the tangerines and he would go, “Oooh! Look…Tangerines!" almost in a child-like voice every single time we passed by one. It was cute at first but after hearing him repeat the same thing like a broken record, we almost wished that the tangerines would disappear because they keep popping out everywhere, all along the way!

Iris then decided to be funny and quickly pointed to the next batch of tangerines before he had the chance to do so. To our surprise, he stepped on the emergency brake in the middle of the road and asked us to go down and take pictures. It has got to be the loudest and most horrified “No!” ever from the four of us in the car at that time! Luckily there were no cars behind us!

Heart shaped tangerines <3

Most of the time, his driving skills are okay except that he loves going downhill or taking sharp turns in top speed, which scared the daylight out of us! He claimed that this "roller coaster" would be the best time for hugs and kisses but in case you haven't noticed, we are a group of four girls. Obviously, we can’t be hugging and kissing each other in the car! LOL!

Our view on the road. So many breath taking scenery in Jeju we miss!

The next day, we did everything in “Pali pali” (Fast in Korean) Style, so fast that we later had to check our cameras to recollect where we have visited. We literally felt as if we were running the Amazing Race, trying to make every second and every cent count!

Columnar Joints @ Daepo Coast...Check!

Filming location of "Secret Garden" at SEAES Hotel & Resort...Check!

Jeju Teddy Bear Museum...Check!

Yeongmori Coast...Check!

Hallim Park...Check!

 Jeju Mysterious Road...Check!

 Hyeopjae Beach...Check!

Apart from being our driver and tour guide, he was also our photographer who risked his life in taking the last picture above! He kept going backwards to the middle of the road when a car was heading his way. Despite us screaming "Car! Car!", he plainly ignored us and kept meddling with the camera, trying to fit us together with the sculptures in the photograph. By now, we can safely assume that Mr Richard Kim is not someone who can multi task! haha

A point to note that although he claims to be an English speaking tour guide, we realized that he was memorizing most of his sentences. If you look closely, there is a paper stuck on his steering wheel and  he would explain by reading from that piece of paper. Ask him anything out of the topic and he would either ignore you or answer something totally out of the topic.

Typical situation :

Mr Kim : There are many many good food in Jeju

Iris : Like what?

Mr Kim : There are many many good food in Jeju

Iris: I know, but what are the famous food?

Mr Kim : No problem! I will guide (which sounded like “ride” most of the times!) you!

At that time, we felt really frustrated because there was no two way communication at all. We couldn't get our points across and he was there reading out loud like a school boy. However, as we look back at it now, we can’t help but to laugh at how funny the situation was. He was part of the reason why our Jeju trip became a memorable one with so many stories and laughter to share! ;)

Our only regret was not doing a thorough research on each of these places so please, do not repeat our mistake! If possible, we would recommend you to plan out the itinerary instead of leaving it in the hands of the driver so that you have better control over your itinerary. Do keep in mind that Jeju is NOT a small island and it takes at least one hour journey to get from one point to the other. A hint, since Jeju is separated into the East Course and the West Course, you can start your planning from there!

Overall, Richard Kim is a nice person and we know he really tried his best to keep us happy. Although the first day didn’t go as well as we had hoped, the second day did sort of made up for it. We appreciate his service and patience, especially after we saw him lost control when a lady driver drove at the wrong side of the one way street. He was scolding her loudly  in Korean and at the same time, keep turning back to apologize to us in English. All we know is that you would never want to mess with an “ahjusshi” (elderly uncle in Korean)! Haha

That's Mr Richard Kim and us not ready for a photograph, cheese!

Richard Kim can be contacted via email at skimsr@hanmail.net or through phone at 001-81-10-3710-0065.

Penang Louis Gan's Murals Location And Map

When we did a research on Louis Gan, we were awestruck to find out that he is only 25 years old and that he had not taken any formal art classes before. Believe it or not, he only learn his art by watching videos and practicing it on canvas! Further, this amazing talented guy is actually our very own Penangnite from Balik Pulau!

Despite having a hearing impairment, he proved that it was not a barrier to his dream of becoming an artist. He was only 16 years old when he won second place at the Malaysian-Japanese Art Competition in 2003 and he further went on to obtain his diploma in Graphic Design.

The story started with the owner of Sin Ban Seong Paper Products, who invited Louis to paint the murals after reading articles about his talent from The Star and Kwong Wah newspaper. The project involved four murals altogether but so far, only three has been completed.

We can’t help but to feel so proud of him! He is truly an inspiration to all! :)

View Louis Gan's Mural in a larger map

1. Brother & Sister On A Swing
Location : Chulia Street Ghaut (at a back alley of a printing warehouse)

Our favourite mural depicting a pair of siblings on a swing is located on the wall of the printing warehouse.

Do keep your eyes wide open or you might miss the mural since it is located inside  the once nameless back lane which is now famously known as the “Step By Step Lane”. We have a feeling that the name was inspired by the printing firm since they both shared the same initials of SBS. Sin Ban Seong and Step By Step...Get it? ;)

Did you also know that the children depicted on the mural are actually children of the printing firm's owner? Well, now you know! ;)

2. Children Playing Basketball
Location : Chulia Street Ghaut (at the back of the old Kwong Wah Yit Poh building)

This mural is directly across the road from the “Brother & Sister On Swing” mural. It is painted on the wall behind the old Kwong Wah Yit Poh building and it depicts two children enjoying a game of basketball.

3. Nostalgic Meal Order
Location : Kinta Lane

This cute mural is located further away from the previous two. It graced the wall of Pinang’s Art Café at Kinta Lane and depicts a girl lowering her basket from the second floor to order noodles from the hawker below. This is apparently how the early 20th century people did their shopping!

Do slow down if you are in the car because the mural is on the opposite side of the one way street.

One fun fact to share...the hawker in the painting is actually the Curry Mee seller in New Lane, which is just on the opposite road! We overheard this from a tourist guide so do let us know if you manage to spot him there! ;)

Here's a friendly and printable map from us for your easier reference. Enjoy roaming the streets of Penang treasure hunting for these creative murals!

10 Useful Tips for Korea

1.  Jihachul App on iOS / Android

Download the Jihachul App on your smartphone because we survived the Korea subways using this super convenient and useful app! It's easy to use and saves a lot of your time!

All you need to do is put in the station that you are departing from and the station that you are arriving at. It will do the rest for you!

The fastest route, the colour of the line that you're suppose to take, ETA and the amount of fare are all now at your fingertips! :)

2. Purchase the T-Money Card

Once you touch down Korea, you should purchase the T-Money card for KRW2,500 at any of the convenience stores to save all hassle of buying a ticket when using the subways or buses. It can also pay for the entrance fees to certain places of interest like the palace and the museum. We top up ours for KRW40,000 and it lasted us through the whole 7 days trip.

Do take note that the remaining balance on the T-money card can be refunded after a KRW500 service charge deduction!

Head over to their official site at Welcome to T-Money World for more information! :)

3. Learn a few basic Korean words.

The ones we found most useful are:-

Toilet - Hwajangshil

Water - Mool ( Just think of a cow moo-ing)

Thank you - Kamsahamnida

Expensive - Bisayo

Right - Oo Reun Jjok

Left - Oen Jjok

The last two proved to be really useful when we are asking for directions. Although the Koreans may know some English, we notice that they have trouble in differentiating from left to right using English.

4. Do not be shy to ask for directions

From our experience, the Koreans are really friendly and helpful. We have met people who would go the extra mile just to help us out instead of replying us with a simple "I don't know". They would google for the directions from their smart phones and some even went as far as calling up the place to ask where they are located so they could direct us there!

Always ask the younger generations for directions as the older generations are most likely to avoid you because to them, you are speaking alien. Hence, the misunderstanding that Koreans are rude and unfriendly :(

5. Free Volunteer Tours

At one point of time, we thought of having a tour guide who is familiar with Korea to take us around. If you search online, there are a few volunteer tours that will pop out but the one we found most cost saving after a research is The Meteor Youth Voluntary Club.

Unlike other volunteer tours, there are no fees involved other than your personal expenses such as transportation fees, meals, entrance fees and money for shopping. The guides are solely responsible for his/her own expenses! :) They also have guides who are fluent in English, Chinese and Japanese.

Do register early at  Meteor Youth Voluntary Club to grab yourself a tour guide! Not only do you get to tour around Seoul for free but you would also gain yourself a new Korean friend!

Unfortunately, they were unavailable at the time we were visiting so we never did get to try out their tour. Share with us your experiences if you manage to get them for your trip to Korea! ;)

6. Be a smart consumer

If a menu does not state the prices, please ask before ordering even if it's just a street tent stall. Do not assume that all street stalls are of the same price. Some may take advantage of your ignorance and charge sky high prices -___-

7.  You may use the elevators in the subway stations

If you are taking the subways to the airport or to the hotel, do not turn green or panic if all you see is a elevator sign for the disabled and a very long flight of stairs. You are allowed to take the elevator even if you are not disabled because we were led to one by the station officer when he saw us with our luggages :) :)

Also, do not get frustrated if the elevator doors did not close even after you've pressed the button. It takes a while for the door to close because the elevator is disabled friendly so be patient, guys!

8.  Discount vouchers

There are discount vouchers that can be printed out online but do read the fine prints as a lot of them required a certain amount of spending in order to enjoy the discount and print out only what you need. Please save the trees, people!

9. Free hanbok rental

You can't say you've been to Korea if you haven't tried on their beautiful Hanboks at least once!  Based on our research, here are a few places that you can try it on for free! :)

i) Ssamziegil Shopping Mall @ Insadong

This is a cute sticker shop with a cute owner that allows you to try on the hanboks and pay a minimal fee of 5,000 - 7,000 won for the stickers to bring home for memories!

Directions to the shop

Keep walking all the way to the top until you reach a pathway full of locks and love notes all over the fence. Take the stairs down and you will see the shop which is located at Level 2! :)

ii) M Plaza @ Myeongdong

The Seoul Global Culture & Tourism Centre is located on the 5th Floor of M Plaza. Just register, wait for your time slot and your hanbok experience is done! We didn't try this one so if any of you have been there before, do leave us a comment and tell us your experience! :)

Directions to M Plaza

From Myeongdong Station (Subway Line 4), Exit 4.
Go straight for 150m to arrive at M Plaza on the right.

Or

From Euljiro1-ga Station (Subway Line 2), Exit 5.
Go straight on Euljiro Street, and turn right onto Myeongdong 9-gil Street.
Turn right onto Myeongdong 9ga-gil Street.
Turn left onto Myeongdong 7-gil Street.
Go straight for 300m to arrive at M Plaza on the left.

10.  Be early and do your tax refund

Always, always make sure you are early to the airport and have enough time to check in your luggages and do the tax refund. Please also be reminded that the Incheon International Airport is huge and it takes a train to get to one terminal from another. Make sure you manage your time properly because trust us, running to catch a plane is no walk in the park! haha

Penang Cat Murals Location and Map

You can never take Penang away from a Penangnite.

Recently, a friend highlighted that fact to us and being a true blue Penangnites ourselves, we couldn’t agree more.

As such, we would like to take this opportunity to share with all of you, the beautiful and creative murals and artworks that have been gracing all over Penang since last year in conjunction with the yearly Georgetown Festival.

The recent one being the 101 Lost Kittens Project.

The 101 Lost Kittens Project is created by Artists for Stray Animals (ASA) which consists of Natthaton Muangkliang from Thailand and our very own Ang Yeok Khang from Bukit Mertajam and Louise Low from Kuala Lumpur in hope to create more awareness towards stray animals.

View 101 Lost Kittens in a larger map

True to its name, there are a total of 101 strays, all but one being cats depicted in the 12 artworks with one bonus Giant Rat mural found all around the heart of Georgetown, Penang. The paint used for the murals are environmental friendly paint and it will eventually be washed off in two years time. As such, do quickly pay them each a visit or you are guaranteed to regret it once it’s gone!

Don't say we didn't warn you! ;)

1. The Real Bruce Lee Would Never Do This
Location : Back alley of Ah Quee Street and Beach Street

This is the funniest and cutest one! Please do not misunderstand as this mural is not intended for people to emulate, but rather to remind the public to treat the stray cats better. The mural is just behind the famous Ernest Zacharevic's "Boy On a Motorbike" and "Boy With A Pet Dinosaur" murals. A friendly tip, do look for the kitten on the right hand corner as a lot of people, including us, missed it! :) Luckily we have a picture of it!

2. No Animal Discrimination Please
Location : Behind Edelweiss Cafe, enter from Armenien Street or Soo Hong Street

The mural is supposed to promote equal treatment for pets, whether they be cats or dogs. It depicts three stencil cats walking over a colour pattern of a dog.

3. I Can Help Catch Rats
Location : Alleyway along Armenien Street

The mural depicts a cat prancing upon a rat and is intended to generate a desire among the locals to keep cats as pets, as they bring along the benefit of keeping down household rodents.

4. Cats & Humans Happily Living Together
Location : Cheah Kongsi (Enter from Armenien Street)

The mural depicts the procession of Taoist deities where the people are replaced by cats. It can also be seen from Beach Street but you can only enter the temple for a close up shot through Armenien Street.

5. Cats Walking For Animal Awareness
Location : Along the back lane walls of the Beach Street Fire Station

The mural depicts a parade of cat stencils along the wall of the Beach Street Fire Station, through the backlane of Beach Street until Victoria Street.

6. Skippy Comes To Penang
Location : Armenien Street Ghaut

The gigantic cat mural is inspired by a cat with a deformed leg named Skippy, who now resides happily in Bon Ton Resort, Langkawi. She used to be a stray until she was rescued by the co-founder of Langkawi Animal Shelter and Sanctuary (LASSie).

7. The Giant Rat
Location : Armenien Street Ghaut

Lurking around the corner of the adjoining wall is The Giant Rat mural (Bonus Artwork), looking as if it is getting ready to pounce on Skippy, the Cat! :P A friendly tip, stand at the right angle and you can take picture of both the cat and the rat together. It would look as if they are looking at each other.

8. Please Care & Bathe Me
Location : Armenien Street Ghaut

This cute mural is located at the alleyway where the Giant Rat is situated and it’s painted on the yellow wall behind the Singapore House.

9. Love Me Like Your Fortune Cat
Location : Armenien Street Ghaut

Just walk further down and you can spot this mural on the wall of a coffee shop. The mural depicts a cat gazing at a group of "fortune cats", perhaps pondering why they have better luck than him.

10. Even If Handicapped, Still Love Me
Location : Victoria Street, in front of China House

This Mama Cat Sculpture depicts a disabled cat which is being carted on a trolley and it is intended to raise awareness of stray animals and to take them off the streets.

11.  Take Time To Sit With Your Pet
Location : Victoria Street , in front of Sekeping Victoria

The artwork depicts a wire-bound kitten walking on a wired sofa chair. The art piece is intended to create awareness among pet owners that they should spend more time with their animals.

12. Fine 500 for Littering
Location : Junction of Victoria Street (Just around the corner of the CF Food Court)

The artwork is meant to discourage people from disposing unwanted pets and to instead neuter / spay their pet to prevent unwanted litters. It depicts two cats made of coloured wires inside an old three cart wheel.

13. Shade Me If You Love Me
Location : Upper side of Victoria Street (near to CF Food Court)

The intention of this artwork is to create awareness for people to adopt and shelter stray animals. Remember to look out for a colour wired cat on the top left corner too, which is unfortunately not in the picture!

Here's a friendly and printable map for your exploration, and do stay tune for our write-ups on the other murals, coming up soon! Cheers :)

Korea At A Glance: Day 6 & Day 7

Day 6

Seoul Tower

A little bit disappointed as the tower is not really as grand or as pretty as we thought it to be. However, we were quite impressed with the amount of locks there! It’s so pretty and interesting to see! :) The admission fees to the tower is 9,000 won per person.  You’re supposed to be able to see the whole of Seoul once you are up there but unfortunately, it was too misty during our time there :(

Directions to Seoul Tower:

COEX Mall

Directions to COEX Mall:
Samseong Station – Seoul Subway Line 2, take Exit 5 or 6.
The Mall is connected to the station so just follow the signs

Day 7

Nami Island

A beautiful island that you just have to visit, whether you're a Winter Sonata fan or not. Once here, you would feel as if you're in a different world altogether! There are two ways to get to the island, either by the ferry (10,000 won) or the ZipWire (38,000 won). We decided to be more adventurous and took the ZipWire which was super fun!

Directions to Nami Island:
Subway Line 2 to Gapyeong Station
Take a bus from station exit to Nami Island

Dongdaemun

Came here specifically for Doota Mall as we manage to print out vouchers to redeem a bag of goodies. Didn't walk around much so we can't really comment much about the place :(

Directions to Dongdaemun and Doota Mall:
Dongdaemun Station Subway Line 4 Exit 8
Cross the street and walk 130m to reach Doota Mall

Myeongdong

Of all the shopping streets, we love this one the most as it seriously has everything! We only had one regret, that is to have more time here! Cosmetics, clothes, shoes, cafes, restaurants, street food... They even have our famous Malaysian Bee Cheng Hiang! Haha.

Directions to Myeongdong:
Myeongdong Station (Seoul Subway Line 4), Exit 5, 6, 7, or 8
Or
Euljiro Il-ga Station (Seoul Subway Line 2), Exit 5.

That pretty sums up our 7-day Korea trip. Our next posts will be highlights of our trip. See you again!

Korea At A Glance: Day 4 & Day 5

Day 4: JEJU – SEOUL

Nanta Show @ Hongdae Theater

At first we planned to watch it in Myeongdong but after doing a research online, we found out that there’s a anniversary special at Hongdae Theater which gives us a 30% discount each! We only paid 35,000 won each for the show….Yay!  On and off they have various promotions, so do always check out their site Nanta Show and make advanced booking online.

This is a must watch show because although it’s a non verbal performance, you would be guaranteed to laugh from start till the end!

If you are watching Nanta in Hongdae, you can also include the Trick Eye Museum into your itinerary as it’s just right beside it! :)

Directions to Nanta (Hongdae):
Hongik University Station (Seoul Subway Line 2), Exit 9.
Go straight for 350m and turn left onto Yanghwa-ro 16-gil.
Continue 120m until you see the Cultural Multiplex on the left.

Hello Kitty Café @ Hongdae

Cute cafe for all Hello Kitty lovers or just people who loves pink, like us! However, neither the food nor the coffee is up to our expectation :( It is pretty pricey too so we would suggest sharing since sharing is caring! :)

Directions to Hello Kitty Cafe:
Shinchon Station (Seoul Subway Line 2), exit Hongik University Station

Got this from their official site so excuse the wrong English spellings! Haha.

Day 5

Gyeongbokgung Palace

Beautiful palace located right at the heart of the city! Make sure you don’t miss the guard changing ceremony which happens every hour from 10am-3pm. The guard changing ceremony is free for all to watch before you enter into the palace grounds. Entrance fees into the palace is pretty cheap too, only 3,000 won per person! :)

Directions to Gyeongbokgung Palace:
Gyeongbokgung Palace Station (Seoul Subway Line 3), Exit 5.
Or
Gwanghwamun Station (Seoul Subway Line 5), Exit 2.

Tosokchon – Famous Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken)

Everyone seemed to be recommending this place online when we were doing our research so we added this in since it’s nearby to the Gyeongbokgung Palace. The place is really unique and pretty! We were there early so the queue wasn’t that long as compared to what we read online! There are 4 different Ginseng Chicken to order and in our excitement, we ordered one each to try out without knowing what is it.

We later found out that we only have to make 2 choices in ordering:-
i) White Chicken (15,000 won) or Black Chicken (22,000 won); or
ii) White Chicken + 100 year old Ginseng (21,000 won) or Black Chicken + 100 year old ginseng (28,000 won)

A word of advice, unless you are a big fan of ginsengs, the normal ones would be enough to try because you need to pay extra 6,000 won for the small bottle of the supposedly 100 year old ginseng. The portion is also quite big so one would be enough to share among 2 persons. Don’t be greedy like us! :P

Directions to Tosokchon:
Gyeongbokgung Station (Seoul Subway Line 3), Exit 2.
Go straight about 170m and turn left onto Jahamun-ro 5-gil Road.
Tosokchon (토속촌) is located 10m ahead on the left.

Insadong

Nice pretty street which sold a lot of souveneirs from keychains to T-Shirts to magnets...basically they have it all! The famous Ssamziegel, a mall designed to look like a street is also located here.

Directions to Insadong:
Take the subway line 3 to Anguk station, exit #6
Walk for about five minutes until you reach a tourism information booth.
After the booth you should turn left and walk down the main street of Insadong.
